Bande à part.

In the seventies the most important subcultural developments of music in New York started: disco, punk, graffiti and the early forms of hip hop. The book Bande à part (New York Underground 60's 70's 80's) shows the movers and shakers of the Big Apples cultural life during the Cold War, portrayed by obsessive and local amateurs; the bloggers of those years.

As anthropologists they caught the artistic bohemian of the cultural capital of the world. In the book, you see Al Pacino, Patti Smith, William Burroughs, Debbie Harry, Grace Jones, Andy Warhol, the New York Dolls and many more - usually not posing, but shot in their natural habitat, the vaults of Manhattan. In Bande à part you also find a gathering of musicians from outside of New York like Iggy Pop, Alex Chilton of The Cramps, all outsiders of the American dream. Pleasant about this collection is the absent of glamour: a timeperiod that'll never come back.

Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art.

Glasgow International Festival brings the art of local and international artists to Glasgow for a stimulating two-week burst of exhibitions across the city, starting on the 16th of April until May 3rd 2010.

Visual art happens all year round in Glasgow but for two weeks every two years, Glasgow International Festival of Visual Art puts it firmly in the spotlight. From artists’ studios through to major museums and a vast range of venues new and old, the festival is the perfect moment to get to know more about contemporary art and how and where it takes place in Glasgow.

The festival gives special attention to Susan Philipsz this year, who is interested in the way sound revives memory. Susan Philipsz has been commissioned by GI to create a new, site-specific outdoor sound work on the banks of the River Clyde. This work will be on display for the duration of the festival. The opening of the festival will be by filmmaker Douglas Gordon with a new video-installation: 24 Hours Psycho. During these two weeks there will be much more work to see from other artists like David Shirgley, Kevin Atherton, Kate DavisLila de Magalhaes.

Air.

On Thursday 29th of April, Queensnight, the doors of a new club wil open: Air.

Air is established on the Amstelstraat 24, which was once the location of famous trance club iT. Sander Groet (ex-ID&T) plus Sjoerd Wynia and Niels de Geus (both involved with the event production company The Good Guyz) have initiated for the new club. The establishment is conceived out of the feeling of wanting to create something new, so says Wynia. We miss the feeling of brotherhood from the starting of the house scene, due to the mix of people. We want to make an exciting nightclub for a diverse audience. Moreover, he does not tell much about the layout of the club or the musical program. In the upcoming weeks, in advance to the opening, there will be much more clear about club Air through messages on the Air website and posts on Facebook and Twitter.

Bagshoes.

Bags and shoes are indispensable supplements to our outfit. They are objects of luxury, status, functionality, sports and spare time. Surprisingly compact, extremely luxurious or practical. They are portable, fashionable accessories, useful utensils and moreover, reflections of human qualities. Bags and shoes have their own body language: they are smooth, rough, creased, folded, soft, hard, shiny, matt, tinted, wrinkled, cold, warm, new or used. They induce us to purchase, make us satisfied, glad and happy.

This is why the new generation of designers of the education of Product Design on the ArtEZ academy in Arnhem show their own designed pieces in the exhibition Bagshoes. They indicate, besides the commercial completion of the bag- and shoeprofession, also the personal, eccentric and artificial experience of it. Bags and/or shoefreak? Well, than it's really worth to see the point of view of these new designers on this division of fashion: they will be the designers of the future.
